The smoke stack carries the hot gas from the fire and the exhaust steam from the cylinders, the stack is tapered so the expanding steam will move up, this creates a partial vacuum in the smoke box drawing the hot gases through the flues of the boiler from the fire box. The length and diameter of the stack are important so a good draft is maintained.
