The steam dome collects the steam from the boiler at the highest point so that water is not sent through the piping to the cylinders as this could cause damage to the cylinder or pistons. Water also reduces the amount of steam available to do work. On some locomotives the throttle valve is inside, on others the throttle is in the smokebox.
